Sat, May 17, 1960's BBQ on the Pedernales at the LBJ Ranch: Mon, May 26, LBJ Historical Park Memorial Day tribute to service in Vietnam, Johnson City: The Friends of LBJ National Historical Park will sponsor a 1967-style Presidential barbecue on the banks of the Pedernales River near the Texas White House.  The LBJ Ranch will come alive with a historical recreation of the barbecue President and Mrs. Johnson hosted on the LBJ Ranch for members of the Organization of American States. Park gates open at 3 PM with exhibits and special tours leading up to a social hour at 4 PM. The social hour will include beer, wine, hors d'oeuvers and a welcoming by LBJ Library Actor Michael Stuart portraying President Johnson. The guests will be entertained with live western music leading up to a Texas heritage show provided by the Fort Griffin Fandangle starting at 5:30 PM. The Fandangle is described on their website as "an outdoor musical based on the pioneer chronicles of West Texas" Spectale-a-plenty of cowboys driving a trail herd; of a stagecoach chased by Indians; of buffalo hunters & gamblers at old Fort Griffin." Following the Fandangle everyone will dine on a meal of barbecue beef and chicken, ranch beans, potato salad, and slaw as provided the 1967 guests. The location in the Live Oak grove next to the Pedernales River should prove a magical evening. After dinner guests will be welcome to continue to enjoy the music, special exhibits, and special tours of the LBJ Ranch as the sun sets on this very special event. The Friends of the LBJ National Historical Park will use the funds raised for this event to help provide future park activities and educational opportunities to the public free of charge.

Sun, June 1, HILL COUNTRY CATTLEWOMEN 2008 SCHOLARSHIP Deadline: The Hill Country Cattlewomen will again award scholarships to college-level juniors with 60 accumulated hours or more and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Two or more scholarships will be awarded to an agriculture or dietary nutrition related major. Additional scholarships are open to any other major. Applicants must be a resident of one of the following counties: Bandera, Blanco, Edwards, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Llano, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Northern Bexar, Real or San Saba.  In 2007, Hill Country Cattlewomen awarded 15 scholarships, totaling $22,200.  Dependent on the success of fundraising efforts by dedicated members, we anticipate a like amount will be available for scholarships this year.   Interested students should send requests for an application to Sandy Kuykendall at P.O. Box 68, Cherokee, TX  76832, or email  sandykuykendall@yahoo.com.  The deadline for completed applications is June 1, 2008.  Winners will be announced at the June 2008 meeting of the Hill Country Cattlewomen.

Summer, Date to be determined, Project WILD Aquatic: At Westcave Preserve. Learn how to teach young people about aquatic ecology and aquatic wildlife using fun, hands-on educational activities. During the six-hour training workshop participants will sample activities and receive a curriculum and activity guide.
