HILL COUNTRY WINERIES & EVENTS

The Hill Country is becoming well known for wine production and is one of the largest wine regions in the nation. Local wineries are
helping Texas become fifth on the nation's list of top wine producers with a large choice of wines to offer.

According to the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Assoc (referenced below), "Texas is the site of the first vineyard established in North America by Franciscan priests circa 1662. As European settlers followed the development of mission outposts, they brought more grapevine cuttings, further developing the industry through the 1800s. Of the 25 wineries that existed in Texas in 1900, only one survived the Prohibition Act of 1919. The Texas wine and grape industry did not fully recover until the 1970s. Today, Texas boast approximately 3,300 acres of vineyard farmland and nearly 100 wineries that produce roughly one million gallons of wine annually. Typically the Texas wine and grape industry contributes about $170 million to the state economy and provides 1,800 jobs."

Visit the many wonderful local vineyards located in the Texas Hill Country. Experience exquisite wines right here in the Lone Star state! Wineries host tasting of newly released wines during the year along with wine and food pairings, seminars, demonstrations and tours. Come and meet the vintners as you tour and taste. Learn more what viticulture is all about.

From Wikipedia: "Viticulture (from the Latin word for vine) is the science, production and study of grapes which deals with the series of events that occur in the vineyard. When the grapes are used for winemaking, it is also known as viniculture. It is one branch of the science of horticulture."
