BALCONES CANYONLANDS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: 512/339-9432; HQ is located off FM 1431 at Lago Vista, on Cow Creek Rd. The refuge is made up of limestone hills and spring fed canyons. The primary purpose of the refuge is to conserve the nesting habitat of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo. Open daylight hours, and on most days. Observation deck. HISTORY & profiles: Handbook of Texas Online: "The area was developed in the 1960s as a lake resort; summer homes, camping facilities, and water sports were the main attractions. The community voted to incorporate in the early 1980s with a mayor-council form of city government. Lago Vista's population was reported as 2,500 in 1988 and as 2,199 in 1990. In 2000 the population grew to 4,507."

Lago Vista sits in the area that was once known as the Upper Colony of Stephen F. Austin. Many remnants of prehistoric civilization, Indians and early settlers mark its landscape. Historic panels are located at the newly constructed LV Sports Complex. The Cox Springs Schoolhouse tells the story of early settlers. Dink Pearson State Park marks where early settlers would cross the Colorado River as they traveled to Austin to buy and sell goods.

When Mansfield Dam was increased in height and Lake Travis was filled, the development of Lago Vista as a lake resort/retirement community became possible. The Bar K Guest Ranch on the Shores of Lake Travis remains to mark Texas lifestyle in the 1940s. The Lago Vista Air Power Museum, built by WWII retired veterans, displays an excellent collection war memorabilia at the Lago Vista Airport that started as an airstrip for Bar K quests.
