SAUER-BECKMANN LIVING HISTORY FARM: Interpreters in period clothing treat visitors to life and techniques in the 1915-1918 period before electricity in this area. Visitors experience the sights and sounds of a real working farm. Daily chores of rural life, interpreted by living history demonstrations, include cooking on a wood burning stove, milking cows, and gardening. Children love the farm animals, including chickens, pigs, mules and sheep. See exhibits on bison, deer and cattle. Also now available are the restored Danz cabin and Behrens cabin (a 2-room dogtrot cabin built by German immigrant H. C. Behrens during the 1870s. The furnishings are typical of such homes in that period). See the fine interior furnishings and other family belongings on display. Nature trails and picnic areas. Background: In 1869, John Sauer founded the homestead and he and wife Christine raised 10 children, including Augusta Sauer Lindig, who served as the midwife at the birth of President LBJ. The Beckmann family acquired the property in 1900, and a good cotton crop in 1915 allowed the Beckmann's to enhance the property. Note, visitors to this day-use park can enjoy historical study, picnicking, nature study, fishing, swimming. The park is famous for its spring wildflower display. The Visitor Center is the focal point and contains memorabilia from LBJ's presidency and interactive displays about the land and people that shaped a president. Visitors can self-guide and tours can be arranged at 830-644-2252 x229. Open daily 8a to 4:30p; 9a to 5:30p in the summer. Located in Gillespie County at the LBJ State Park & Historical Site (see Parks) at Hwy 290 and Park Rd 52, 2 mi E of Stonewall, 1 mi W of Hye.

HISTORY: Handbook of Texas Online: "It was named for Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson by Israel P. Nunez, who established a stage station near the site in 1870 and a post office in 1875. In 1860 a few families were living in log cabins there on a grant held by Justa Flores. In 1879 a settlement called Millville was founded nearby, and in 1882, when the stage station and post office were moved there, its name was changed to Stonewall. The German settlers combined sheep raising with cattle raising and experimented with fruit trees. The Stonewall area is today a major source of peaches. Andreas Lindig built the first limekiln in Gillespie County at Stonewall, and from him the other settlers learned to manufacture lime. Stonewall is 1 1/2 miles west of Lyndon Baines Johnson State Park; part of the land in the park was owned at one time by an original German settler of Stonewall, Casper Danz. The population of Stonewall, estimated at 200 in 1925, attained an estimated high of 300 in 1961 and fell to a low of 150 in 1964. It was estimated at 245 from 1974 to 1990. The population reached 469 in 2000."

Stonewall lies in the beautiful Pedernales River Valley that runs through this part of the Texas Hill Country.

Birthplace and deathplace of President Lyndon B. Johnson.
